Recap: Virginia vs. SMU
Corpus Christi, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Anthony Gill scored 19 points to lead the Virginia Cavaliers past the SMU Mustangs, 76-73, in the semifinals of the Corpus Christi Challenge at American Bank Center Arena.
Coming off the bench, Gill shot 6-of-10 from the floor for Virginia (6-1), which will take on Missouri State in Saturday night's championship game. Joe Harris scored 15 points and Evan Nolte had 12 points, with the duo combining to shoot 6-of-6 from 3-point range.
For SMU (5-2), Nic Moore registered 17 points, Markus Kennedy tallied 14 points and five assists, while Yanick Moreira logged 11 points and five rebounds.
Even though SMU outshot Virginia from the field in the first half, 43.5 percent to 33.3 percent, the score was tied at the break, 30-30. The Cavaliers kept the game close by shooting 6-of-8 from long range and 10-of-13 from the stripe.
After the 11th tie of the game at the 9:04 mark of the second half, the Cavaliers took a 55-53 lead less than a minute later on a pair of free throws by Gill. The Mustangs spent much of the stretch run within one possession of the lead but never again tied the game or held the advantage.
Virginia was red-hot from beyond the arc at 10-of-14, while SMU was only 5- of-14 from 3-point range.Game Notes
