Recap: South Carolina vs. FIU

Columbia, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyrone Johnson paced four teammates in double figures with 18 points as the South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the FIU Panthers, 84-72, in non-conference action at Colonial Life Arena.

Johnson shot 5-of-10 from the field and also handed out seven assists for South Carolina (2-2). Brenton Williams and Jaylen Shaw both scored 16 points off the bench, and Demetrius Henry netted 14 points.

For FIU (6-3), Tymell Murphy tallied 22 points, five rebounds and five assists. Marco Porcher Jimenez poured in 15 points, while Rakeem Buckles and Dennis Mavin put up 11 and 10 points, respectively.

South Carolina shot an impressive 51.6 percent from the floor in the first half, but FIU was even better at 56 percent, as the Panthers took a 42-39 lead into intermission.

The Panthers held a two-point lead, 51-49, with 13 minutes to play before South Carolina took control of the contest with a quick 7-2 run, and it never surrendered the lead from that point forward. The Gamecocks helped seal their fate by shooting 10-of-10 from the foul line in the final 1:04.

South Carolina scored 21 fast-break points, compared to just 10 for FIU.
