Recap: Providence vs. Robert Morris
Providence, RI (Sports Network) - LaDontae Henton led all scorers with 21 points as the Providence Friars posted a 77-68 win over the Robert Morris Colonials in the second round of the NIT at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
Bryce Cotton accounted for 20 points for the Friars (19-14), followed by Kadeem Batts with 10 points, but he turned the ball over five times without benefit of a single assist before fouling out. Vincent Council shot a mere 1- of-9 from the floor, yet still finished with 12 points and was also responsible for 10 assists.
The Colonials (24-11), who stunned Kentucky in the first round of the tourney last week, were led by Karvel Anderson who tallied 18 points off the bench, while Russell Johnson and Mike McFadden tacked on 16 and 14 points, respectively.
RMU opened quickly and led by as many as seven points less than three minutes into the first half, but even with the squad shooting 52.0 percent from the floor and 6-of-10 beyond the arc in the opening frame, the Colonials still found themselves knotted with Providence at 34-34 at the break.
In the second half the Friars, who made good on only 33.3 percent from the field and 1-of-8 behind the 3-point line through the first 20 minutes of action, jumped to 57.9 percent accuracy from the floor and 18-of-22 at the free-throw line in order to come away with the win.
Providence not only dominated on the glass, 43-18, it also outscored the visitors at the charity stripe, 31-11.
With the victory, the Friars will now challenge Baylor in the quarterfinals later this week.Game Notes
