Recap: Virginia vs. St Johns

Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Justin Anderson scored 18 points as the Virginia Cavaliers moved on in the National Invitational Tournament with a 68-50 win over the St. John's Red Storm in the second round at John Paul Jones Arena.

Akil Mitchell narrowly missed out on a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds for Virginia (23-11) which will take on Iowa in the quarterfinals. Taylor Barnette added 13 points while hitting three shots from long range and Mike Tobey chipped in 10 points.

Phil Greene IV paced St. John's (17-16) with 18 points. Jakarr Sampson added 14 points and six rebounds and Chris Obekpa grabbed 10 boards before fouling out.

Virginia came out of the gates shooting the ball well, hitting 57.9 percent from the floor in the first half to claim a 32-21 lead at the break. St. John's lagged behind finishing off just 32.1 percent of its field goal attempts.

The Red Storm didn't improve much in the second period when they shot 35.3 percent from the floor. The Cavaliers, meanwhile, remained above 50 percent shooting to coast to the victory.

The Cavaliers assisted on 19 of their 24 field goals and had a 15-6 edge from the free-throw line. St. John's had a slight, 35-33, advantage on the boards and collected 10 steals.
