Recap: Samford vs. Appalachian St

Birmingham, AL (Sports Network) - Clide Geffrard Jr. scored a game-high 20 points as the Samford Bulldogs held on to defeat the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 72-68, in Southern Conference action at the Pete Hanna Center.

Geffrard Jr. was 4-of-6 from long range and recorded five boards in the Bulldogs (7-12, 5-1, SoCon) victory. Raijon Kelly finished with 15 points, seven assists, and four rebounds. Brandon Hayman and Tim Williams scored 14 and 13 points, respectively as Samford won its fourth consecutive game.

For the Mountaineers (7-10, 3-3), Jay Canty was two rebounds shy of a double- double, scoring 19 points. Tab Hamilton netted 16 points, while Nathan Healy and Mike Neal scored 11 points apiece as Appalachian State lost a second consecutive game.

In the opening stanza, Appalachian State shot 53.8 percent from the floor and 5-of-9 from beyond the arc, while Samford shot 63.3 percent from the floor including 4-of-7 from long-range. Samford outscored Appalachian State, 28-16, in points in the paint, en route to a 46-41 halftime advantage.

Samford was 11-of-25 from the floor after the break, while holding Appalachian State to 10-of-24 shooting from the field. The Bulldogs managed to win despite a 1-of-3 showing at the charity stripe in the second half.

Samford outscored the visitors in the paint, 38-22, and used a 19-6 edge in bench points to improve to a 5-1 SoCon record.
