Recap: Youngstown St vs. Ill-Chicago

Youngstown, OH (Sports Network) - Gary Talton scored 23 points including a buzzer beater that sent the contest to overtime as the Illinois-Chicago Flames outlasted the Youngstown State Penguins, 88-83, in triple overtime during Horizon League action at the Beeghly Center.

Talton also had nine assists, Daniel Barnes put in 20 points, Josh Crittle had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, Marc Brown added 12 points off the bench and Hayden Humes chipped in 10 points for Illinois-Chicago (15-10, 6-6 Horizon) which ended a two-game slide.

Kendrick Perry tallied a game-high 29 points, Blake Allen had 16 points and was a rebound shy of a double-double and Kamren Belin added 14 points before fouling out for Youngstown State (14-11, 6-6) which has lost three of four.

Both teams struggled in the first half. Youngstown State led 19-16 at the break after both teams failed to reach above 30 percent shooting.

After the break the Penguins shot 46.6 percent from the field and hit 8-of-14 from beyond the arc while the Flames improved to 53.1 percent shooting. Perry knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:20 remaining to give the Penguins a 57-53 lead. Brown answered with a jumper to pull the Flames to within two points. Perry missed another 3-point attempt on the next possession and Talton was able to force overtime with a last second jump shot.

It was Illinois-Chicago that held a three-point lead with 19 seconds to play in the first overtime after a pair of Talton free-throws. Perry answered with a 3-point shot with two seconds left and another period was needed.

After Hayden Humes knotted the contest at 72-72 with 48 seconds left in the second overtime both teams missed their last field goal attempts to set up a third extra session.

The Flames knocked down 7-of-8 free-throw attempts in the final 31 seconds of the final overtime to hold on for the win.
