Recap: Old Dominion vs. Drexel
Norfolk, VA (Sports Network) - Damion Lee registered a double-double with 34 points and 10 rebounds as the Drexel Dragons held off the Old Dominion Monarchs, 81-77, in Colonial Athletic Association action at the Constant Convocation Center.
Lee ended up shooting not only 11-of-14 from the floor on the night, he sank all but one of his eight 3-point tries for the Dragons (12-17, 8-9 CAA) as they snapped a two-game slide. Also scoring in double figures for Drexel were Frantz Massenat and Derrick Thomas with 22 and 13 points, respectively, with each also handing out six assists.
The Monarchs (4-25, 2-15) were paced by Aaron Bacote and DeShawn Painter with 15 points apiece, the latter clearing a team-best 10 rebounds as the squad lost for the fifth time in the last six outings. Donte Hill accounted for 14 points and four assists and Dimitri Batten 12 points off the bench.
Drexel scored the first points of the night, led by as many as 15 points late in the first half, before settling in with a 41-29 edge at the break. Both teams shot just over 45 percent from the floor in the period, but the Dragons knocked down a staggering 11-of-18 attempts beyond the arc through the first 20 minutes of action.
In the second half both programs picked up the pace with better than 52 percent accuracy from the field, with the visitors also converting a solid 13- of-17 at the free-throw line in the frame as well.
ODU had a chance to tie or take the lead in the finals moments, but Drexel stole an inbounds pass with 6.3 seconds remaining and then Massenat knocked down a pair of free throws with 4.5 seconds to play to seal the four-point victory.
Drexel finished the night shooting an impressive 14-of-23 (.609) behind the 3- point line.Game Notes
