Recap: Dayton vs. Illinois State

Dayton, OH (Sports Network) - Jackie Carmichael registered a double- double with 25 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Illinois State Redbirds to a 74-73 victory over the Dayton Flyers in a non-conference tilt at UD Arena.

For the Redbirds (8-3), Tyler Brown added 16 points and five assists while Jon Ekey chipped in 13 points.

Kevin Dillard and Dyshawn Pierre each scored 14 points to lead the Flyers (8-3), while Josh Benson finished with 13 points.

Illinois State shot well to open the contest, connecting on 53.6 percent of its field goal attempts, as the Redbirds took a 42-40 advantage into the break. The Flyers were also accurate early, shooting 48.4 percent from the field in the first half.

In the second half, the Redbirds stayed hot, making 52.2 percent of their field goal attempts. While the Flyers did make 46.7 of their shots from the field, they managed to hit just one of their six three-point attempts after halftime. After Dayton took a one-point lead at 62-61 with just under eight minutes to play, Illinois State scored the next seven points to go back ahead for good. Dayton had two chances to win the game in the final seconds, but both shots were off the mark, allowing the Redbirds to escape with the victory.

Both teams had trouble holding onto the ball, as the Flyers turned it over 16 times and the Redbirds committed 20 turnovers. The win by Illinois State was only the second in six tries against the Flyers all-time.
