Recap: Mercer vs. Tennessee St

Macon, GA (Sports Network) - Justin Cecil led all scorers with 19 points as the Mercer Bears won their first round bout of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament over the Tennessee State Tigers 68-60 at University Center.

Daniel Coursey tallied 16 points, eight rebounds, and five blocks for Mercer (23-11), which will await to hear its second round matchup after all the first round games have been played. Travis Smith add 10 points for the Bears.

For Tennessee State (20-13), Robert Covington recorded 18 points and eight boards, while Kenny Moore scored 11 points and Jordan Cyphers chipped in 10 points.

Tennessee State shot an abysmal 23.3 percent in the first half, but Mercer didn't fare much better at 25.9 percent. The Tigers took a 21-19 lead into halftime.

Both teams improved their shooting after the break, but Mercer shot especially well at 59.1 percent, including 5-of-10 from three-point range. A Langston Hall three-pointer gave the Bears a 47-44 lead with 8:25 left, and they would never relinquish the lead.

Mercer helped itself at the free-throw line, connecting on 20-of-24 from the stripe. Tennessee State made just 7-of-11 from the foul line.
