Recap: Washington vs. Texas-Arlington
Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Terrence Ross scored 23 points to lead the Washington Huskies to an 82-72 victory over the Texas-Arlington Mavericks in the first round of the 75th annual National Invitational Tournament at Alaska Airlines Arena.
C.J. Wilcox added 15 points for Washington (22-10), while Darnell Gant recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Abdul Gaddy added 10 points and Tony Wroten handed out eight assists to help the Huskies advance to the second round, where they will battle the Northwestern Wildcats.
LaMarcus Reed paced Texas-Arlington (24-9) with 20 points. Bo Ingram contributed 17 points while Kevin Butler and Jordan Reves grabbed seven rebounds each for the Mavericks.
Desmond Simmons made a layup to put the Huskies up 34-26 with five minutes remaining in the first half, but the Mavericks quickly came back and tied it up at 37-37 just before the opening period ended. Washington shot 50 percent from the floor, but UT-Arlington outscored the Huskies, 22-14, in the paint and scored 12 second chance points in the first frame to stay neck and neck.
The game continued to go back and forth after the break until Ross drained a jumper with 9:37 left to put Washington ahead for good. The Huskies made 68.4 percent of their field goal attempts and converted 15-of-24 from the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes to earn the double-digit triumph. The Mavericks shot 44.8 percent from the field but only managed to take seven free throws in the second half.
UT-Arlington held a 37-27 advantage in the rebounding battle. The Huskies assisted 18 of their 27 made field goals.Game Notes
