Recap: Samford vs. Furman
Asheville, NC (Sports Network) - Charlie Reddick and Bobby Austin scored 15 points each to guide the fifth-seeded Furman Paladins to a 75-66 victory over the fourth-seeded Samford Bulldogs in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament at the U.S. Cellular Center.
Brandon Sebirumbi added 12 points for Furman (15-15), which will advance to play the top-seeded Davidson Wildcats on Saturday. Sebirumbi and Reddick grabbed seven rebounds each in the victory.
Drew Windler paced the Bulldogs (11-19) with 21 points. Tyler Hood netted 13 points and Raijon Kelly had 10 points as Samford suffered it third straight loss.
The Paladins closed the first half by scoring five points in a row to take a 39-33 lead into halftime. Furman's advantage on the scoreboard came after it hit 6-of-15 from three-point range in the opening half. Samford fell behind after it went 2-of-10 from beyond the arc in the first period.
Furman extended its lead to double digits after the break. Sebirumbi knocked down a jump shot that gave Furman a 64-50 advantage with 8:21 left to play. The Bulldogs battled back and only trailed 68-64 with 1:16 left to play, but Furman made seven free throws and only allowed Samford to score once more before the final buzzer sounded.
The Bulldogs outscored Furman, 44-16, in the paint. Samford was unable to keep up as it went 2-of-20 from three-point range in the contest. Furman stayed ahead by converting 19-of-25 from the charity stripe in the contest.Game Notes
