Recap: Western Carolina vs. Citadel

Asheville, NC (Sports Network) - Harouna Mutombo scored 21 points on Friday, leading Western Carolina to a 68-56 first-round win over The Citadel in the Southern Conference Tournament.

Trey Sumler added 18 points and six assists while Keaton Cole also had six assists to go with 14 points for the Catamounts (15-17), who will face Wofford in Saturday's quarterfinals.

The Bulldogs (6-24) were paced by Mike Groselle's 21 points. DeVontae Wright chipped in nine points and six rebounds.

Groselle scored the first bucket of the game, finishing a layup less than a minute in. It proved to be The Citadel's only lead of the game.

The Catamounts responded with successive three-pointers from Mutombo, Cole and Sumler to establish a permanent advantage.

They were up 24-17 at the break behind a 7-of-16 performance from beyond the arc.

The Citadel pulled within five, 37-32, on a Groselle three-point play near the midway point of the second, but consecutive three-pointers from Brandon Boggs and Cole pushed the advantage to double-digits, 43-32, and the Catamounts were not threatened the rest of the way.
