Recap: Coll of Charleston vs. Appalachian St

Asheville, NC (Sports Network) - Isaac Butts and Andre Williamson each had double-double performances on Friday, as the Appalachian State Mountaineers took down the College of Charleston Cougars, 93-81, in the opening round of the Southern Conference Tournament.

Butts had 11 points and 14 rebounds while Williamson added 10 points and 15 boards for the Mountaineers (13-17), who last advanced to the championship game in 2010.

Mike Neal and Omar Carter ended with 21 and 19 points, respectively, for Appalachian State, which shot 53.1 percent from the field and went 8-of-15 from three-point range. Tab Hamilton tallied 17 points.

The Mountaineers will face top-seeded UNC Greensboro in Saturday's quarterfinal round.

Trent Wiedeman finished with 19 points and seven rebounds for the Cougars (19-12), who lost to Wofford in the title game last year. Antwaine Wiggins and Andrew Lawrence each donated 16 points.

With the score tied at 42 with 14 1/2 minutes to play, Appalachian State went on a 15-5 run. Neal tallied five points during the burst, including a three- point play with 10:40 left to make it a 57-47 contest.

The Cougars got only as close as six from there and the Mountaineers led by as many as 18.
