Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Nikola Cvetinovic finished with 15 points to lead the top-seeded Akron Zips to a 78-74 victory over the fourth-seeded Kent State Golden Flashes in a semifinal contest of the Mid-American Conference Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena.

Alex Abreu added 13 points for the Zips (22-10), while Nick Harney finished with 12 points and Chauncey Gilliam scored 11 points. Akron will play the Ohio Bobcats in the MAC championship game Saturday.

Randal Holt led the Golden Flashes (21-11) with 21 points, while Justin Green finished with 20 points and Michael Porrini chipped in 11 points and nine assists.

Both teams shot well to open the game. Akron connected on 55.6 percent from the field, while Kent State was even better at 58.3 percent. The Zips had the advantage beyond the arc though, making 4-of-10 while the Golden Flashes missed on all three three-point attempts. After trailing by as many as nine in the half, Kent State narrowed the gap slightly, as Akron took a 41-36 lead into halftime.

The squads cooled off somewhat after the break. Kent State dropped to 44 percent from the field, including 5-of-9 on three-pointers. Akron struggled even more, making just 37.9 percent, but did drop in 4-of-10 from long distance. The Golden Flashes scored the first six points of the second half to grab a one point lead, 42-41. The Zips responded in impressive form, rattling off a 14-0 run to go back on top 55-42. A late run by Kent State saw them get as close as two, 76-74, with 16 seconds to play, but the Zips were able to hold on for the win.

Akron finished with a 35-28 edge on the boards. Both teams took care of the ball well, each turning it over just 11 times.
