Recap: Toledo vs. Miami-Ohio

Kalamazoo, MI (Sports Network) - Rian Pearson scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Toledo Rockets downed the Miami-Ohio RedHawks 60-53 in a Mid- American Conference Tournament first round bout.

Matt Smith added 12 points for the seventh-seeded Rockets (17-15), who will face off against 11th-seed Central Michigan Wednesday night in Cleveland in the second round.

Drew McGhee scored 16 points and hauled down eight boards for the 10th-seeded RedHawks (9-21). Julian Mavunga finished with 12 points, six boards, and six assists.

Toledo led 32-24 at halftime after shooting 42.3 percent from the floor in the first half and it was also helped by going 7-of-9 from the foul line. Miami, which led by six in the early going, shot just 40.9 percent from the floor, including 3-of-11 from long range.

Toledo led by as many as 19 in the second half despite shooting only 37.9 percent from the floor. The RedHawks struggled from long range, shooting just 6-of-18 from outside the arc. Miami took just one foul shot in the second half.

The Rockets had a 39-28 edge on the glass.

After the game, Miami head coach Charlie Coles retired after 22 years as a collegiate head coach, 16 of those as the leader of the RedHawks. His 218 wins are the most in school history.
