Recap: Iowa vs. Illinois

Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Matt Gatens scored 20 points and Aaron White added 13 points and nine rebounds as Iowa hung on and defeated Illinois, 64-61, in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.

Iowa (17-15) nearly squandered a six-point advantage in the final 37 seconds of the contest.

Meyers Leonard had 18 points to go with six rebounds for Illinois (17-15), which did not attempt a free throw in the game and was 7-of-26 from beyond the arc. D.J. Richardson and Joseph Bertrand netted 11 points apiece.

Bertrand's tip-in cut Illinois' deficit 62-58 with 28 second remaining, and White missed the front end of a 1-and-1 at the other end. Bertrand then knocked down a trey to make it 62-61 with 16 seconds left.

Gatens made a pair of foul shots, making it a three-point margin with 10 ticks to play.

But Richardson's three-pointer from the left wing hit the back of the rim with two seconds remaining and White pulled down the defensive rebound to secure the win for Iowa.

Richardson's trey with a second to go in the first half gave Illinois a 31-27 advantage heading into the locker room. Leonard was 5-of-6 from the field for 10 points in the half to pace the Illini, who had 11 assists on 14 made field goals.

White scored seven points during a 15-4 Hawkeyes run as Iowa led, 57-50, midway through the second stanza.

The Hawkeyes will face top-seeded Michigan State in the quarterfinals on Friday.
