Recap: Southern Ill vs. Northern Iowa
Carbondale, IL (Sports Network) - Led by 18 points from Anthony James, the Northern Illinois Panthers downed the Southern Illinois Salukis, 65-61, in a Missouri Valley Conference tilt at SIU Arena.
For the Panthers (19-12, 9-9 MVC), Deon Mitchell added 12 points and Jake Koch scored 11 points.
Mamadou Seck led the Salukis (8-22, 5-13) with 18 points, while Justin Bocot finished with 14 points.
Both teams struggled shooting the ball to open the contest. UNI made 40.9 percent from the field and SIU connected on just 39.4 percent. The Panthers led by nine, 20-11, with just under eight minutes to play in the first half, but the Salukis used an 18-3 run late in the half to go ahead 31-28 heading into the break.
In the second half, SIU improved from the field, connecting on 47.8 percent, while UNI held steady at 40 percent. The Panthers used a 14-1 run to push their advantage to double digits, 51-41, but the Salukis responded with a 14-1 run of their own to take control, 55-52, with 3:28 to play. UNI was able retake the lead however and made 10 of its final 12 free-throw attempts to hold on for the victory.
SIU outscored UNI in the paint, 28-16. The Panthers held a 28-9 advantage in bench scoring.Game Notes
