Raleigh, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Former North Carolina guard P.J. Hairston submitted paperwork on Friday to play in the NBA Developmental League this season.

Hairston was arrested multiple times last June, leading to his suspension from the UNC basketball program by head coach Roy Williams.

Last month, the university did not seek reinstatement from the NCAA for Hairston, ending his career with the Tar Heels. Hairston is currently enrolled in an online class at UNC.

"I am excited to continue to pursue my degree at UNC while also pursuing my dream of becoming a professional basketball player," Hairston said in a statement. "I appreciate all the support I've received during this process."

The 6-foot-6 shooting guard played two seasons for the Tar Heels, leading the club in scoring at 14.6 points per game as a sophomore.

By submitting paperwork to the D-League, Hairston would enter the player pool and is free to sign with any team. Hairston will also be eligible for the 2014 NBA draft. Jonathan Givony of Draft Express ranks Hairston as the 32nd best draft eligible prospect.
