Most of us are doing what we can to preserve the environment, but only a few know what to do beyond recycling, carpooling or using energy efficient light bulbs.

For 2010,the biggest step towards being green is to compost the waste in your home. It sounds hard and timely but if you have any kind of yard or patio, it’s easy and a terrific way to get rid or the enormous amount of waste we produce every single day.

Author of the book Gorgeously Green, Sophie Uliano, says, “For me, as a mom, in my kitchen at home. There are my fruit and veggies scraps straight into the compost bin. I can put in coffee grounds, I can put in tea bags, bread, pasta, paper and paper receipts, everything. It’s so satisfying for it not to go in the trash but for me to know it’s going to be transferred into wonderful compost that will enrich my garden. Things that we can’t compost are meat and fish, dairy or fats because it will smell and attract rodents. Finally, thing I can put in is packaging for foods, flatware and some chip bags. So to me, this is phenomenal.”

Sophie says that composting is a win-win situation because it keeps trash out of the landfill and produces something positive for our garden.
