LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - If Kentucky hopes to be a contender in the Southeastern Conference, a win against South Carolina will be a critical test, coach Rich Brooks said, and will require improvements in all aspects of the Wildcats game. Both defensive end Jeremy Jarmon and linebacker Braxton Kelley dubbed the Carolina game (Saturday at 12:30 at Commonwealth Stadium) a "must win."

At his weekly news conference Monday, Brooks lauded the South Carolina defense, which is ranked second in the SEC.

Brooks admitted that the Gamecocks have improved dramatically on both sides of the ball at an inopportune time for the Wildcats. He said he was disappointed with his team's performance against Alabama, citing specifically mistakes by the defense and quarterback Mike Hartline.

Brooks said he is most worried of South Carolina's confusing hodgepodge of defensive looks and their physicality, which will be a handful for the Kentucky offense. Brooks said he hopes he can get more out of his running game, which has been inconsistent but can be explosive, adding there may be difficulties because of a lack of continuity on the offensive line.

Two offensive linemen, Stuart Hines and Jess Beets, are out indefinitely with injuries sustained against Alabama. Receiver
DeMoreo Ford is doubtful with a shoulder injury. Defensive tackle Ricky Lumpkin and quarterback Randall Cobb will practice this week and will play Saturday.

Cobb will play as a receiver and backup quarterback, though he isn't 100 percent, Brooks said. Strong safety Ashton Cobb, who had been suspended from the university, will practice again this week and will be available Saturday.
