Orioles send Strop to DL

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - The Baltimore Orioles placed reliever Pedro Strop on the 15-day disabled list prior to Saturday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Strop, a key member of the bullpen during Baltimore's run to the American League playoffs last season, has been dealing with a lower back strain. The right-hander has struggled mightily thus far in 2013, posting an 0-2 record along with a 6.11 earned run average in 22 appearances and issuing 14 walks in 17 2/3 innings pitched.

To fill the roster spot, the Orioles recalled pitcher Steve Johnson from Triple-A Norfolk.

Johnson went 4-0 with a 2.11 ERA in 12 games (4 starts) with Baltimore last season, but has spent the majority of this year in the minors. The 25-year-old compiled a 1-2 mark with a 5.49 ERA in four starts with Norfolk.

Granderson heads back to the disabled list

St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - New York Yankees outfielder Curtis Granderson is back on the 15-day disabled list after suffering a fractured knuckle on his left pinkie finger.

The Yankees made the roster move on Saturday, a day after Granderson was hit by a pitch from Tampa Bay's Cesar Ramos in the fifth inning of a 9-4 New York win.

Granderson began the season on the disabled list, recovering from a broken right wrist he sustained in his first plate appearance of spring training. He missed the first 38 games of the season and had just returned to the lineup on May 14. In eight games he is hitting .250 with a home run.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi wouldn't speculate on how long Granderson would be sidelined, but the three-time All-Star is expected to visit a specialist when the team returns to New York following this weekend's series in St. Petersburg.

The Yankees filled Granderson's roster spot by recalling outfielder Brennan Boesch from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Boesch was hitting just .209 with two homers and five runs batted in over 20 games with the Yankees before being sent down when Granderson returned. He was batting just .179 in seven minor league games.

Yankees' Granderson fractures knuckle

St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - New York Yankees outfielder Curtis Granderson suffered a fractured knuckle on his left pinkie during Friday's 9-4 win against the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Yankees, who have been decimated with injuries to several of their key players this season, also saw starting pitcher David Phelps exit the contest in the eighth inning after being drilled on his right arm by a line drive off the bat of Ben Zobrist.

Granderson's injury, which was a fractured left fifth metacarpal, occurred in the fifth inning when he was hit by a pitch from Cesar Ramos. Granderson stayed in the game and scored on a walk to Jayson Nix, but then was replaced in the field by Ichiro Suzuki in the bottom of the frame.

Granderson missed the first 38 games this season due to a fractured right wrist he suffered after being hit by a J.A. Happ pitch in his first spring training plate appearance.

Granderson is hitting .250 in eight games this season. He hit .232 with a team-leading 43 homers and 106 RBI in 160 games last season.

Despite having 12 players currently on the disabled list, the Yankees find themselves in first place in the AL East. Shortstop Derek Jeter, third baseman Alex Rodriguez, first baseman Mark Teixeira, catcher Francisco Cervelli and pitchers Joba Chamberlain and Andy Pettitte are all sidelined.

Nats 2B Espinosa has broken bone in wrist

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Washington Nationals second baseman Danny Espinosa has a broken bone in his right wrist, though the team has no intentions of sending him to the disabled list.

Espinosa originally injured the wrist on April 14, after he was plunked by Braves left-hander Paul Maholm, but did not report any discomfort until the team was in San Francisco from May 20-22 for a three-game set. He traveled to Baltimore Friday, where X-rays determined the break.

The Nationals don't have plans to send the veteran infielder to the DL and are hoping that rest will help the injury.

Espinosa, who also is dealing with a torn right rotator cuff, is hitting just .163 this season with three homers and 12 runs batted in.
