Police: Suspect Shot at Mailman
Wednesday, 28 October 2009 21:39
Police say they don't know what triggered a 39-year-old man to fire at least five shots at his mailman at around 12:00 p.m. Wednesday in Danville. Neighbors who know his family say it was out of character.

"Within 15 minutes we had all of Danville's police force right here and it was kind of alarming," Danville resident Lisa Anderson said.

Anderson was met by officers when she went outside to get her mail Wednesday afternoon.

"They were telling all the neighbors, 'you need to leave because there is a young man at large and he has fired a gun at the post delivery man," Anderson said.

"We set up a perimeter, and then we went to the surrounding houses, and either had people sort of bunker down in place, or we had them go and evacuate the area," Danville Police Capt. James Monroe said.

The mailman, who was uninjured by the shots, told police the shooter was 36 year old Juan Warner who lives in the 1000 block of Regency Road in Danville.

"After a little bit of negotiating, we were able to get the subject to come out," Capt. Monroe said.

Warner was arrested and taken to Boyle County detention center. The mailman told police he doesn't know what set the man off.

"You could tell he was agitated. I don't know if there were mental issues or some other issues going on, "Monroe said.

His neighbor, Lisa Anderson, is a former postal worker who says it's normally the other way around.

"You know the postal people going postal quote unquote because I've been on that side of the field too," Anderson said.

Anderson says this was an unusual incident to happen in their normally quiet neighborhood.

Warner faces two counts of wanton endangerment and the case remains under investigation.
