Fatal Shooting in Lexington
Tuesday, 29 September 2009 16:03
A 22-year-old Lexington man was shot to death early Tuesday afternoon inside a home at 623 Georgetown Street.

Police say they came to the address after a report of someone trying to break in to the house.  When they got there, they found 22-year-old Jermaine “Hungry” Birch with several gunshot wounds.  Birch, who was a third team All-State defensive lineman at Henry Clay High School in 2005, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tuesday evening, police announced they had a suspect – 20-year-old Deondrae Darnel Fishback, also a Henry Clay graduate.  As of Tuesday night, Fishback had not been charged with Birch’s murder.  Police say they found Fishback at  the scene and charged him with trafficking drugs within 1,000 yards of a school and being a felon in possession of a handgun.  Fishback is in the Fayette County jail.

Birch’s mother was at the scene shortly after the shooting and told ABC 36 News she was leaning on her church family, many of whom were there, too.

“My son was loved by a lot of people.  There was people who'd address me, 'You Hungry's mom?' and it was like, 'I have a name.'  So they knew me through my son,” she said.

Eugenia Howard said Jermaine Burch was a good friend of her son and wondered how she’d tell him of Hungry’s death.

“This child is too good.  He’s like a golden boy.  Works, went to school, had his diploma.  It’s just ridiculous,” she said.
