"It all stems from the issue that you have too many tenants living in an area that wasn't designed to have that many people living in it," explains Lexington Mayor Jim Newberry. Councilwoman Diane Lawless says while this is a big issue for students, other people who live in the city will be affected too. She says it creates parking problem and trash and sewer issues, among other things. Residents say the density is destroying neighborhoods. The mayor says it's been on their radar for a long time and something needs to be done."This is a problem that has surfaced from time to time, over the years. It's a long-standing problem, one that goes back at least 25-30 years but we are trying to find a way to cooperatively address the issues," says Newberry. So, the mayor is holding a series of meetings with all those parties affected; including landlords, members of UK's student government, representatives from neighborhood associations and council members. "We have agreed to continue to meet, I am encouraged by the progress. But, by agreement of those who were present in the meeting today, that's all we're going to say. I hope to meet rapidly with this group and hope that if we can make some proposal that the council can consider," comments Newberry. Urban County Council's planning committee is expected to vote on the amendment Tuesday, then it will go before council for a vote and finally there will be a public reading so people can voice their opinions. Let's Talk
Finally some dialogue about the overcrowding. Landlords who rape the property, take advantage of the students, and disregard the neighbors will cry loudly. Their only concern is how much money goes into their bank account. Landlords are destroying the neighborhoods around the University.
