Students were given consent forms a few weeks back, asking parents if they wanted their child vaccinated. Today, 500 students in Fayette County Public Schools got doses of the vaccines during school hours. At Tates Creek Elementary, about 200 students are made a visit to the school gym for the vaccine. Health officials say school aged children are in the highest risk category for the H1N1 virus. Parents can choose whether they want their kids to have the vaccine as a shot or a nasal mist, but students did have to get the consent form completed to get the free vaccine. School officials say everything about the in-school vaccination is voluntary, including whether the students follow through with their parents. Today is just the first day these vaccines were available in schools. Officials tell ABC 36 they plan to reach every school in Fayette County in the coming few weeks.
