How would you like to know how many calories are in your meal when you eat-out at a restaurant or fast food joint? New legislation proposed Wednesday would require many chain restaurants in Kentucky to provide calorie information on their menus and menu boards.
“We Americans spent over $16 billion last year on food outside our homes,” Rep. Kelly Flood said.
The legislation would only apply to chain restaurants with more than 20 locations nationwide.
“Restaurants play a very important part in our busy lives, and that's because we live in times where we need to be able to feed ourselves well in a fast and efficient way,” Rep. Flood said.
The bill's purpose is to help consumers make healthier eating choices.
“Studies show time and again that people use this information to make smarter, healthier choices,” Rep. Flood said.
Local McDonald’s franchise owner, Joe Graviss, thinks the proposed bill is a waste of time and money.
“I would love to see my friends in legislature spend a lot more time working on Kentucky’s real problems rather then calorie counting,” Graviss said.
Graviss says McDonalds already displays nutritional information on pamphlets, their website, and even some of their packaging.
“We have all the nutritional information you could want and if you want more it’s available,” Graviss said.
Graviss feels such a bill would also be costly at a time when so many are struggling.
“We need to be working on improving the lives of Kentuckians not counting calories," Graviss said.
Kentucky is one of 15 states considering proposed menu labeling legislation.
Graviss sure is an idiot. He says "“I would love to see my friends in legislature spend a lot more time working on Kentucky’s real problems rather then calorie counting,” Obese is a problem idiot! He also says “We need to be working on improving the lives of Kentuckians not counting calories," Umm counting calories well help improve the lives of others. This guys just made a fool out of himself. He just mad because he knows this will hurt business if people see the calories next to that Big Mac.
How ignorant can we become? Are we not in a recession? I just heard the gov. state how much we were in the red and needed to cut programs. COMMONSENSE IS NOLONGER IN USE.
