There are some new alternatives to the controversial 35 story CentrePointe development. They may seem a little ‘out of this world’, but architecture experts say they’re actually better suited for Lexington. The University of Kentucky’s College of Design hosted a two day design challenge. Teams from L.A., Chicago and Lexington started working on alternative designs Friday afternoon, and presented their ideas Monday morning. Each of the three designs preserves the historic buildings along Main Street that are set to be demolished under the Webb Companies’ plan. They also incorporate green spaces, multiple entrances, an expanded space for the Farmer’s Market, and the same programs the Webb’s included in the CentrePointe development, such as hotel, condos, office space and retail space. These designs are not expected to serve as a new design for the CentrePointe development, however, Michael Speaks, Dean of UK’s College of Design said, “The point of this is not to make alternatives to the Webb project, but to give the city and to give us an opportunity to think about other ways that this problem could be tackled” Speaks said. Tuesday, Preserve Lexington a group that is opposed to the demolition of historic buildings along Main Street for CentrePointe will appear before a judge to seek an injunction preventing the demolition of those buildings while they appeal the original ruling that allows the Webb’s to level the area. |
