Frankfort Flexible Hours
Tuesday, 15 July 2008 14:57
The Beshear administration is "aggressively" pushing more state workers to switch to flexible working hours. Governor Steve Beshear says the effort is aimed at helping employees reduce the cost of their commutes.

"Families across Kentucky are looking for relief," said Beshear. "We must be responsive and we must be innovative."

For the past seven years state government has allowed employees to request flex hours. However, less than two percent of Kentucky's 35,000 executive branch employees have taken advantage. The goal is to increase that to 10 to 15 percent. Beshear says more employees working flex schedules ill not lead to a reduction of government services. "This will not reduce operating hours for various offices or reduce the quality of service we provide the public," said Beshear.

The governor says his plan is not an attempt to steer Kentucky government toward a four day work week. He says supervisors will be responsible for determining if a worker can work flex hours and then monitor that employee to "make sure that no one is taking advantage of it and that everybody is playing by the rules."
