Friends Help With Storm Clean-Up
Sunday, 11 October 2009 22:53

In Western Casey County, friends, neighbors, strangers and even jail inmates pitched in Sunday to help clean up after Friday's F-2 tornado, which damaged a total of 90 homes.

"They've been great, they've really pulled together, helping -- I think there's about 60 out here today," deputy Disaster Emergency Services director Josh Wethington told ABC 36 News. "They said they'd rather be out here working than sitting in a jail cell," he said of the 60 or so male and female inmates.

Twelve-year-old Tyler Sims spent his Sunday, not playing, but picking up what was left of two families belongings.

"Helping these people pick up the pieces of their house, and all their stuff," he said.

Church members served hot meals at the Crockett Trail General Store, a gas station at the intersection of KY 70 and KY 208. The meals were served next to a gas pump damaged by the twister.

Nine-year-old Kara Harmon may best have summed up the spirit reigning in western Casey County Sunday.

"Because I want to help them," she said. Asked why, she replied, "Because it's important."
