Lexington Vice Mayor Jim Gray is calling the latest allegations of misuse of money at Blue Grass Airport "astonishing and stunning." Council members believe there is "considerable reason for concern" but want all the facts before they take definitive action.
Gobb resigned last week. But Council member George Myers says it now not a matter of what Mr. Gobb did or did not do "but more importantly what the board allowed him to do or not do and thats the bigger issue here." So attention is turning to the people Gobb answered to, namely board chairman Bernie Lovely. Gray and council members met Tuesday morning in an effort to restore confidence among taxpayers by making a few proposals: 1. Urging Lovely to suspend all involvement with the airport board until the state audit is finished 2. Freeze all board appointments pending the outcome of the audit. 3. Temporarily Suspend non essential out of state business trips for airport administrators "This is a big deal. It's not like we are managing a shoe store here we're managing an airport. Public safety, commerce is at stake here," Gray says. Regardless of the outcome of that audit, some council members are worried the damage is already done. Perception versus reality. They believe it may be time to start with a clean slate. Councilman George Myers says all airport board members are being put on notice. Mike Gobb is in Gray: "It is my understanding Mr. Gobb is paying for that trip." Michelle Rauch: "Do we know for sure?" Gray: "I don't know for sure that's a question I'm glad you're asking and you need to ask that question to the airport." When confronted with the same question an airport spokesperson said that question was only being answered by board Chairman, Bernie Lovely. Calls to him were not returned Tuesday. |
