For the second year in a row, David beat Goliath as the Kentucky Wildcats lose to a small school early in the season. Last season it was Gardner-Webb in game two, this year it's V.M.I. in game one.
The cats knew coming in that V.M.I. was small, fast and could shoot the three, and they did, hitting 14 of 31 from beyond the arc. They got the cats to play their frentic-style of play. Kentucky trailed by as many as 23 in the second half, but U.K. made a furious comeback led by Ramon Harris and Jodie Meeks. Meeks finished with 39 points but he went cold late and didn't score the last seven and a half minutes of the game.
Kentucky actually took the lead 97-95 with just under five minutes left, but V.M.I. came right back, hit free throws down the stretch and went on to upset Kentucky 111-103.
