This week's "cool school" is Southwestern High School in Pulaski County. Students do some pretty amazing things at schools across the state and that is exactly how I would describe what some students are doing at Southwestern High.Since the 1980's students who work with the school's Raptor Center have been rescuing and rehabilitating birds of prey that were found injured. Over the years, students have bulit several buildings behind the school to house the birds. The students learn how to nurse a bird back to health. They can read x-rays, draw blood, give shots, and do a variety of other medical procedures. They are able to re-release some of the birds back into the wild but many of them will spend the rest of their lives at the school because their injuries are too severe. Raptor Center director Frances Carter started rescuing birds because of a growing number of them that were being put down in the 80's. There are currently dozens of birds living at the school like eagles, vultures, and various breeds of owls. Students realize if their program didn't exist, most of these birds would not survive. That's why Southwestern High School..is a cool school!
