Trauma surgeons at the UK Chandler Hospital say more than half of the trauma patients admitted to their unit have alcohol in their system.
In an effort to help, the hospital is providing screening and brief intervention for alcohol to those who are admitted to the trauma center.
"Well, this is a real teachable moment," said David Maynard, licensed professional counselor, of a patient's time in the ER. "They're more willing to consider it (intervention) at that point than at any other, especially if their life has been hanging in the balance."
The American College of Surgeons has mandated the brief intervention in all Level 1 centers like UK.
UK Chandler Hospital has been screening and intervening for the past 15 months and Maynard says two thirds of those who have accepted help have "adjusted" their drinking habits.
"We haven't done our job if we don't get to that, the underlying cause of what brought them in," Dr. Joseph Conigliaro of UK Chandler Hospital said of the intervention efforts."If we just patch them up, or just get them through here and we send them out without addressing that we've only done half our job."
