BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP) - Dominique Hayden ran for 210 yards and two touchdowns to help Lexington Christian capture their first KHSAA 1A State title with a 55-19 victory over Mayfield.
The game was sloppy early, with both teams combining for six turnovers in the first quarter. The Eagles (14-1) scored first after an interception by Sam Maybriar set up a Hayden's five-yard touchdown run with 5:50 left in the opening quarter. "We knew we had to come out and play hard," Hayden said. "We had Mayfield broken down. We had to come out and play to the best of our ability and that's what we did." The Cardinals (13-2) got a 47-yard touchdown pass from Luke Guhy to Xavier Shelton with 58 seconds left in the quarter, but Lexington Christian scored 21 unanswered points to take a 28-7 lead at halftime. "This means a lot," Lexington Christian coach Paul Rains said. "I think back seven years ago when we were practicing out in that cow pasture and didn't even have a goalpost or anything else, and to come down and win a state championship, we've just been so blessed." Mayfield opened the second half scoring with a one-yard touchdown run by Matthew Schultz but couldn't get much else going. Lexington Christian racked up a 512 yards of total offense, getting 205 passing and 307 rushing. Lucas Witt was 13-for-20 for 205 yards passing and had three touchdowns. Branden Burdette caught seven passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles. Guhy capped the game 15-for-28 for 263 yards and two touchdowns for Mayfield. Tyreese Murrel ran for 87 yards on 18 carries and Xavier Shelton caught eight passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns. "I'm proud of this team here," Mayfield coach Joe Morris said. "We're a better team than the score indicated, there's no question about that. We're a much better team than that. It just wasn't our day." It was the third title game this decade for the Cardinals, who won in 2002 and last appeared in 2005. Trackback ( 0 )
