Two library employees were fired in September after refusing to allow children to check out a copy of “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” series. The book contains adult images, including nude women. Since then, a public meeting was held in which some speakers said the comic books should be taken out of the library and others said such an act would violate the First Amendment. "So we came up with this compromise that will put the graphic novels in the sections not easily visible to children,” library director Ron Critchfield told ABC 36 News. Some of the estimated 500-600 graphic novels will be moved one row over, next to books about comic books and drawing. Others will be moved away from the young adult section to the adult non-fiction area. They began moving some of the books on Tuesday and expect to be finished by early next year. Anyone of any age can still check out a book. But a mother of six has her own solution for making sure her children don’t check out materials with which she’s not comfortable. "I'm always with them. I pick it out with them and I approve of it all, so that's my way of keeping track of it, taking a look at everything they read,” said Shanika Colone. Trackback ( 0 )
