A new non-profit service began operation in Fayette County Monday morning![]() with the goal of providing rides for senior citizens who have lost their ability to drive or no longer feel comfortable driving. Independent Transportation Network, or ITNBluegrass, will offer rides to people over 60 years-old and adults who are visually impaired. The service runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The fares are subsidized and funded by private money; no taxpayer dollars are use. Volunteers will use their own vehicles and pay their own insurance. Lexington Vice-Mayor Jim Gray provided the first ride to Mayme Hamby. Gale Reece, Executive Director of ITNBluegrass, tells WTVQ 36 News the service's main goal is, "to help people stay social, stay connected to the community." ITNBluegrass' goal is to provide 4800 rides during the next year. After the service becomes established in Fayette County, they plan on expanding it to the surrounding counties.
