As the two year anniversary of the crash of Comair Flight 5191 approaches, Hospice of the Bluegrass spent Friday afternoon at the crash site collecting flowers to give to the family members of the victims. The property next to the site has hundreds of irises growing in the field and so the property owners wanted to give the family members something they could take with them as a living memorial. Hospice of the Bluegrass spent several hours Friday collecting the irises and potting them. The flowers will be presented to family members at a private memorial next week. Volunteers digging up the bulbs say it is something they can plant in their gardens and will come back to life each year. Joni Johnson, director of Hospice's bereavement program, said these living memorials are also a sign of how the community continues to support these families. 49 people were killed in the crash of Comair Flight 5191 when it took off from the wrong runway on August 27, 2006.
