Firefighters said after hitting a pole, the victim of a single-car accident at Patchen Wilkes and Winchester was ejected from the vehicle, then wound up trapped underneath it. She was conscious when she was taken to UK by ambulance.

Fire crews said the accident happened around 11:15 Sunday night.

Lexington fire said the woman was traveling inbound on Winchester toward downtown Lexington when she went off the road and hit a light pole.

Witnesses living across the street said they heard the sound of the accident, then looked out the window to the sight of smoke.

That's when they called 911. They said a passer-by stopped at the accident, found the victim trapped under one of the back tires of the car and held her hand until first responders arrived.

Traffic slowed at the intersection late Sunday night into the early morning hours while crews cleaned up the broken glass and car parts but the intersection is now flowing smoothly again.
