Without discussion at its meeting Monday night, the Fayette County Board of Education approved a stricter policy for school related student trips.
Superintendent Tom Shelton told the Lexington Herald-Leader that the changes were not the result of a specific issue or trip, but rather part of an annual review policy.
This comes ten months after a Dunbar High School student, Travis Gaines, became paralyzed after diving into shallow water in Florida during a spring break baseball tournament.
A police report from the incident quoted Gaines' friends as telling a witness that he'd been drinking.
Under the revised policy, chaperones can't drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes or use illegal drugs during the trip. They are also responsible for students at all times during the trip.
Chaperones have to be at least 25-years old, be a district employee or a parent or legal guardian of a student on the trip.
Supervising teachers can't give up responsibility for a student to anyone other than another supervising teacher or a designated chaperone.
Teachers are responsible for monitoring chaperones.
Chaperones have to be approved by the school principal and take part in an orientation by the supervising teacher or staff members.
Adults must undergo a criminal background check and sign a form acknowledging their responsibilities.
Chaperones have to follow the instructions of teachers in monitoring the students.
If adults ride on a school bus or school-chartered bus, each adult must be an officially designated chaperone.
All district policies regarding student behavior apply during trips.
