Dr. Kevin Smith from the Richmond Road Veterinary Clinic says the flea population reaches its maximum each fall.
He says this year may be worse after a mild winter failed to kill off all the outdoor fleas.
Fleas can do more than just cause discomfort for your dog or cat.
They can transmit diseases and suck enough blood from smaller pets to cause them to be anemic.
To prevent fleas from making your pet a home, Dr. Smith recommends using monthly flea prevention on each pet you own throughout the year.
The outdoor flea population will be reduced once the frost and cold arrive.
