Enforcement Of New Scrap Metal Ordinance In Lexington Begins Saturday

A new scrap metal law in Fayette County will be enforced beginning Saturday, June 16, 2012.

The ordinance was passed by the Urban County Council May 16th, but in order to help educate and prepare scrap metal dealers to implement new record keeping requirements, a 30-day grace period was designated.

The ordinance creates regulations for buying, selling and processing regulated scrap metals.

The purpose of the law is to curb the rise in metal theft and reduce future losses.

The new ordinance can be found in its entirety on the LFUCG Web site under Council Clerks Office, Code of Ordinances, 13-54, ordinance NO. 58-2012.

The ordinance requires each scrap metal dealer to obtain a license to operate within Fayette County.
