Abigail Carter has been in a wheelchair for nearly 8 years. She helps others dealing with adversity by working at the Lexington Rescue Mission.

She says, "I love working with people who are vulnerable and in vulnerable situations, and I think because I am in a wheelchair, I have an understanding of what that means."

The people she helps at work think she is a blessing. Unfortunately she struggles to make it to work some days. Her specially equipped van frequently breaks down.

She is now in a national contest, a part of National Mobility Awareness Month, to find local heros. The prize for the contest is a new van, exactly what she needs.

She has started a local Facebook page called, "Help Abigail Win A Van." The page includes a link to the voting site, where everyone can vote each day through May 10th. The top 5 percent of contestants will move onto the last round, where a panel of judges will pick the winner.

She has been in the wheelchair since she was 8; not for 8 years as the article states.
