The Rockcastle County Coroner has identified an off-duty firefighter who was killed Friday morning when his pickup truck collided with a train in the Twin Tunnel Road area.

The coroner identified the victim as Chris Kerns.

The coroner said Kerns had been a full-time Berea firefighter since 2008 and a volunteer firefighter in Mount Vernon.

The coroner said Kerns had been out mushroom hunting when the deadly collision happened.

The coroner said Kerns was alone in the pickup truck.

The coroner also said drugs or alcohol were not suspected as factors in the accident.

The coroner said the accident happened at a crossing that was unmarked without any warning signal lights or crossing gates.

No one on the train was injured.

The accident is still under investigation.
