Fayette County Public School’s test scores were released Friday morning for the first time since a new scoring system was adopted in Kentucky.

According to the results, Fayette County Public Schools need improvement overall, ranking 54th out of 174 districts statewide.

FCPS were in the 69th percentile, one percentile point away from being classified as a “proficient” district.

Schools within the district varied widely in results.

Veterans Park was named the #5 elementary school in the state. SCAPA was ranked the #2 middle school.

On the other end of the spectrum, Booker T. Washington Academy ranked in the lowest 25 elementary schools in Kentucky. Also, Leestown Middle School ranked in the lowest 25 middle schools.

Booker T. scored only 39.2 out of 100. Leestown Middle scored 37.9.

Kentucky students took the new K-PREP tests for the first time last spring.

The scoring system is different and complex. Under it, 70% of all schools will fall in the lowest category of “needs improvement.”

Only 28 schools in Fayette County, or just over half, fell into that category.

Fayette County also had nine schools categorized as “proficient” and 15 in the highest “distinguished” category.

Beaumont Middle School was one of those distinguished schools, but was still named one of Fayette County’s “focus schools.”

There are a total of 20 “focus schools” in the county because of low gap scores. Low gap scores mean that some of the school’s student subgroups, including minority, low-income or special needs children, scored lower compared to their peers statewide.

Parents are warned not to compare scores with last year’s, or even next year’s. FCPS officials say scores will continue to change for the next five years as different subjects are integrated into the testing.

Parents with children attending a school in Fayette County will be able to see their child’s individual scores at the end of November.
