Ashley Judd will not run against US Senator Mitch McConnell in the next election, which she announced today on twitter.

With Judd out of the running, Dr. Stephen Voss, a UK Political Science Professor, said some of the excitement surrounding the campaign when a celebrity runs is lost too.

“Our national press coverage of this election will be a lot less than it originally seemed,” Voss said. “It’s going to operate a lot less under public scrutiny.”

Voss said Judd’s run for Senate probably would have brought out more voters.

“Ashley Judd might not have been able to beat Mitch McConnell, but she would have generated a lot of excitement,” Voss said. “Turn out would have risen. The money would have poured in. Some people who weren't previously democrats would have registered as democrats to feel like they were part of what she was doing.”

But Voss didn’t think she would win an election against McConnell because he said she’s a liberal activist democrat in a conservative state.

“Probably her running would have been really fun and cost Mitch McConnell and his supporters a lot of money and failed,” Voss said.

Voss said he does still expect this election to get a lot of attention, but it won’t bring the same novelty of having a big movie star in the running.
