A Frankfort home was filled with tens of thousands of bed bugs Thursday.

ABC-36 first told you about the problem Tuesday. Pest control professionals began working to trap the blood-suckers, and asked one of the country's leading experts to come and help: University of Kentucky Entomology Professor Michael Potter.

When asked if he'd ever seen anything this bad before, he said, "This is one of the worst. I've seen others that are, you know, in line with it. But this is about as bad as it gets."

The woman living in the home, Deborah Goins, was hospitalized because the bugs were literally eating her flesh.

Potter said there is a ground rule to keeping bed bugs away.

"Don't pull second hand items off the curb--particularly beds and couches and recliners, or upholstered furniture."

Experts said something else people can do is look for eggs: take a flashlight, and look between the folds and creases of furniture.

And pest control professional Travis Hardin, with OPC Pest Control, said you should never try to treat a problem yourself.

"Home pesticides will not eliminate the problem. This couple has been trying for a year, and you see how bad the issue is."

Professionals said it would be another week before they'd be able to get rid of the bed bug problem.

Goins was taken out of hospital quarantine earlier in the week, and was placed in an assisted living center in Frankfort.
