The Laurel County Sheriff said an East Bernstadt man was killed Monday evening on Highway 30, east of London.
Deputies said that it happened when a Chevy Silverado collided head-on with a Dodge Van.
According to investigators, the Chevy driver was headed west when he merged into the east lane to pass vehicles.
When the Chevy faced oncoming traffic, deputies said the driver moved into the eastbound emergency lane but continued to drive west.
Witness told police that the Dodge Van, which was headed east, moved to the eastbound emergency lane in what appeared to be an attempt to avoid a collision.
Deputies said the van was then struck head-on by the Chevy.
According to investigators, the van driver, Jerry W. Thompson, had to be extricated from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Deputies said the Chevy driver was airlifted to UK Hospital in critical condition.
The investigation into the collision continues.
