Kentuckians continue to serve in Afghanistan, even as the war winds down.

On Wednesday, an officer’s family was able to reconnect with their loved one as they were celebrating his award from Eastern Kentucky University.

EKU’s “Night of Distinguished Professionals” awarded several students for their academic excellence.

One of those students was 1st Lt. Heath Bergmann, who is working on getting his masters degree while being deployed in Afghanistan.

Administrators presented the award to Heath’s wife, Lynze, as Heath watched on Skype from Afghanistan.

Heath is taking two courses while serving overseas.

“Whatever he can do better and to succeed more, that's where you'll find Heath,” Lynze said.
