Sheriff John Root in Laurel County said the department responded to an injury accident Saturday afternoon.
According to the investigating officer a black colored Kia Amanti was traveling westbound on the Hal Rogers Parkway when it crossed the center line and hit an eastbound white colored Chevrolet Tahoe head-on. The black colored Kia came to rest blocking both lanes of traffic and the white Tahoe came to rest off the shoulder against a guardrail.
The driver of the black Kia was identified as 40-year-old James Hart of Manchester. He was airlifted from the scene to UK hospital for treatment. A deputy on the scene smelled alcohol and upon further investigation, Hart was charged with DUI.
The driver of the white Tahoe received serious injuries and was transported to St. Joseph hospital London for treatment. Also injured in this vehicle was a 13-year-old male juvenile transported to St. Joseph hospital in London for treatment. Another occupant in this vehicle that was uninjured was a nine-year-old male juvenile.
