A Lexington teenager who’s beaten the odds before, hit another milestone today. But his family said they’re not out of the woods yet.
On his 16th Birthday, Braxton Upthegrove’s mom, Michelle Upthegrove, remembers when doctors came into her hospital room after Braxton’s complicated birth to tell her he wasn’t going to live.
“They let the entire family say their goodbyes before I saw my child. And then I got to say my goodbyes,” Michelle said. “But today he's still here. And we are celebrating.”
Celebrating with family and friends, who Braxton said helps him to keep fighting because Braxton is still struggling with his health.
“I'm looking forward to finding a kidney so I can get better,” Braxton said.
And hopefully not get hooked up a machine every night.”
Braxton is hooked up to a dialysis every night for about 10 hours. He needs a kidney donor to get better before his body becomes too unstable for a transplant.
“To donate life is such a huge part of him being here today,” Michelle said.
